Cape Town's relationship with pizza has improved dramatically. A decade ago you were choosing between generic Italian chains and mediocre takeaway. Now the city has wood-fired Neapolitan spots that import their flour from Naples, Roman-style al taglio that sells by the weight, and neighbourhood pizzerias that actually ferment their dough properly. The gap between good and bad pizza has never been wider — which makes knowing where to go more important.
The benchmark I use is simple: does the base have flavour? Too many Cape Town pizzas are vehicles for toppings rather than dough with actual character. The places on this list have figured out that the dough is the point.
The Wood-Fired Spots
Burrata on Bree Street is the current Cape Town standard for Neapolitan pizza. The dough is fermented for 48 hours, the oven reaches the right temperature, and the char on the crust is the kind you want — not accidental burning but deliberate caramelisation. The margherita is the order if you want to benchmark the kitchen; the cotto e funghi (ham and mushroom) is what I order when I'm not testing.
Rosso Pizzeria in Tamboerskloof takes a slightly different approach — the base is thinner and crisper than classic Neapolitan, but the sourcing is excellent: local mozzarella, proper San Marzano tomatoes, and a selection of interesting seasonal toppings. The outdoor courtyard is one of Cape Town's better settings for a summer evening pizza.
The Neighbourhood Options
Magica Roma in Woodstock has already been mentioned in the Woodstock eating guide, but it deserves a specific call-out here: the pizza is the reason to go. Thin Roman-style base, properly cooked, and a menu that doesn't overload every pizza with fifteen toppings. The funghi is excellent and the house red is drinkable at a fair price.
Col'Cacchio is a chain that operates at a level above what its format suggests. Reliably thin-crust, consistently good ingredients, and wide enough coverage across the city that there's likely a branch near wherever you're staying. It's not destination pizza, but it's the dependable answer when you need good pizza with no surprises.
For takeaway specifically, Pepe's Pizza in Green Point is a local institution: small menu, proper quality, and a wait that tells you it's worth it. The pepperoni and the four-cheese are the consistent orders.
