Every Saturday morning, the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock becomes one of the best food destinations in the city. The Neighbourgoods Market has been running since 2006, and while it's grown considerably, it hasn't lost the thing that made it special: independent traders making genuinely good food in small batches.
It opens at 9am and closes at 3pm. Get there before 11am if you want the best selection and any hope of a table. After midday it becomes more of a social event than a food market, which is a valid reason to go but a different experience entirely.
What to Eat
The wood-fired pizza is always the queue you should join first — it sells out before noon. There's usually a French crepe stall, a Turkish gözleme vendor, excellent kimchi fried rice, and a rotating cast of artisan bakers selling sourdough loaves that disappear within the first hour. The cheese counter near the entrance has some of the best local cheesemakers in the Western Cape represented in one place.
The produce section at the back is where locals do their serious shopping: heritage tomatoes, small-batch preserves, locally grown herbs, and seasonal vegetables from farms in the Swartland and Elgin Valley. If you're cooking that weekend, this is where to start.
Practical Tips
Bring cash — many vendors don't take cards, and the ATM queue gets long. Parking is easier than you'd expect on Albert Road, but the side streets fill up fast. A reusable bag is essential unless you enjoy carrying artisan bread in your arms through a crowd. The covered section gets warm and busy; the courtyard area is better for eating at leisure.
The market is outside during summer and partially sheltered in winter. If you're visiting between June and August, check the weather before going — a howling South Easter doesn't make for a pleasant market morning, even with good food.
